There is a lot that is going on in our world today and a lot of it has to do with the US and its role in the world. This forum will not only be about the experience but hopefully it will provide you with an insight of what kind of decisions and issues the head honchos of our government deal with on a daily basis. This provides 6 days of experiencing what our country is built on. Not only on the government level but also on the military level. If you are thinking about a career in the government or military I think this is an indispensable opportunity.

There are so many useful things about this experience. I wish I would have known about this when I was still in high school. It offers experiences in areas of diplomacy and national security that I previously never knew existed.

In high school I was in JROTC. I "knew" I wanted to join the Navy and work in Intelligence. I was going to do all types of high tech things and I wasn't to interested in learning about the rest... I mean like it had nothing to do with me or my interests right?

Wrong! A few months into the Navy, in my secret spy school... September 11, 2001 happened. Life changed. There was so much I didn't know I didn't know. Over the next few years and a time spent in the Middle east working on the ground as part of a "big picture" I became exposed to the diplomatic and humanitarian factors that impact war.

National Security to me was all about the military, FBI, and CIA. I was way off. It is an exciting inter-agency multifunctional dynamic environment. Countless organizations balance national security strategies, national interests, and foreign policy in a seemingly seamless way.

NYLF offers this insight in a tidy 6 day experience. It's truly life changing. I have seen scholars come to the program, like me, interested in one specific area, oblivious to everything else. Then they leave with an all new perspective. It broadens your depth and understanding of our government, while teaching you about yourself, your own personal interests, and exposes your inner leader.

I wish every single student in every school could participate. Those that have the option shouldn't miss it for the world.
