So is just a normal button up shirt or polo shirt considered professional? I'm from Tx and thats just about as dressed up as I get.

No.
Slacks, tie, button-down shirt, and dress shoes and socks make up professional.

They're pretty strict about this.

Guys, don't worry so much. A rule of thumb in the professional world is always change your tie and shirt to create a new outfit. You don't need 6 separate suits. Maybe you want to change coats and slacks. But many outfits are re-workable if you keep yourself neat and tidy. Plus, Irons are usually available.

You could wear a Dark suit with a collared shirt and tie, take that jacket and pair it with khakis and a shirt (and tie always). Go back to the Dark suit, wear a different colored tie, or even just a different colored shirt.

U could pack a small bottle of downy wrinkle releaser too. it goes a long ways to freshen your clothes and reduce wrinkles. When u shower at night hang your clothes for the next day in the bathroom door with you... a lil steam freshen and reduces wrinkles. Wearing undershirts under your collared shirts will also keep them fresher and makes for a professional look (non with logo's of course).

Most importantly, don't wait to get to DC to break in your new shoes. You will do lots of walking. Get comfortable shoes that can endure the elements and long days. Don't bother to pack lots of "casual clothes" it's best to pack an assortment of clothing that can be used as both business and casual as to save space. Ie: the collared shirt with jeans during off-time or even a polo shirt. Sweaters are also good options in cooler climates that could be worn professionally or as casual wear.

I went ahead and bought one good business suit to wear. Other than that, I'm bringing a couple pair of khakis and some collared shirts, a few ties, and a casual outfit or so. It wont be a fashion contest, and with how much suits cost you won't want to buy more than one.

Your clothes should stay fairly fresh, considering we won't be rolling around in the dirt of taking part in heavy physical activity. The tips the FFA gave are good too.

As for shoes, any nice shoe will do. No skate shoes, tennis shoes, climbing shoes, hiking boots, etc. If you're still having trouble, ask your mother or grandparents, they'll be able to tell you Wink

Remember you're responsible for your luggage, and YOU have to carry it, so be reasonable in your packing.

PROTIP: They have photo examples of what acceptable dresswear is in the attendee login area. If a newscaster would wear it, you can wear it.

Let me quote the NYLF play book (which you will all receive day 1):

NYLF is a professional conference. To ensure that this standard is maintained, all students are expected to exercise professional discretion in appearance and personal habits and to maintain a professional, conservative image at the forum.

During the day and some evening events professional attire is required.

- Women: Professional attire includes suits, dresses, coordinated skirts of medium length or dress slacks and blouses/sweaters. Articles that are not not appropriate are mini skirts, denim, leather, capri pants, sleeveless or strapless shirts (unless worn with a jacket/sweater at all times), tops with plunging necklines and halter/tank tops.

-Men: Professional attire includes business suits or sports coats with slacks/dress pants. Ties and coats must be worn when professional dress is required. Jeans and cargo or carpenter pants are not appropriate.

Professional attire does not include athletic clothing, printed T0shirts, or sheer fabrics. Participants must also wear professional dress shoes. Birkenstocks, tennis shoes, casual sandals, platforms, and flip flops are not appropriate, and heels are not recommended.

Casual Attire:

Casual attire will be allowed at other times, including travel to and from the forum, and after the competition off all scheduled events. Casual attire includes jeans, T-shirts, athletic wear, tennis shoes, etc. Consistent with our Code of Conduct, offensive or inappropriate clothing will not be permitted.

Please note that this is not meant to be an exhaustive list. It is expected that good judgment and discretion be exercised at all times.

-----

Wow, whewww... That was a lot of typing. But there you have it word for word. So men will have to plan on wearing a coat/jacket each time the schedule states "professional attire."

See You All Soon! Have safe travels.

What about coats (not blazers, actual outerwear)? I'm attending the spring 2009 week, and I'm also from Maine, so cold weather won't be a problem for me. They said that we'll be doing a lot of walking; is that indoors or outside? I'm trying to pack light.

You must wear a suit jacket or sports coat for professional attire. There is another Faculty Advisor here from Maine... She uses a winter coat as well. Lots of walking outside.

My son brought two suits, two uniform tops, one pair of uniform pants, four dress shirts and four ties. He didn't even use them all. I guess it is better to have and not need than to need and not have.
