The summer is going by faster for me because I'm in another medical summer program. If anyone wants to come out to Montana, have a free plane trip and get paid over $1000 to take classes and prepare themselves for health careers for 6 weeks in the summer, you should check out the program I'm in. There's actually several of them in my state - one in Bozeman called U-DOC and one in Missoula called REACH/HCOP. I've had a blast over the past four weeks and feel like I'm in an extended NYLF program. The website for the program I'm at is http://www.umt.edu/hcop. It's targeted to minorities and future pharmacists, but there are many white students and future doctors as well. The program is offered to high schoolers and college students, and I highly recommend it.

Wow. That sounds awesome..except that I've been out of the country for the last 3 or so weeks (we left the 12th) and the program is over now. I guess I'd be too old next year?

It depends on which year of school you're going into. If you're going into your senior year of high school or freshman year of college, you're in the P-1 program (high schoolers). They also have a P-2 program for students entering their sophomore and junior years of college. In two years, I'll be old enough to do the college program, so I plan to return and meet up with old friends.

Cool. I'll be a freshman in college this year. You don't have to go to that college to attend the camp do you? It sort of sounds like you do, from their site.

No, you don't have to be attending the U of M. There were college students in HCOP this past year from schools in California and Tennessee. It's open to students from across the United States.

How is everyone's school year so far? After Hurricane Katrina hit, everything was unusual for awhile. Now eveything is getting back to normal. At my school we have to start school five minutes earlier and end school fifteen minutes later, to make up the time from the storm.

School has been extremely busy. After HCOP at the U of M, I spent a week volunteering at a Bible camp and worked diligently on a summer history project. I didn't make All-State Band this year, but I was able to attend the Montana-Idaho Clarinet Festival. Marching band just got over and I'm leading the clarinet choir this year. I received the Pride Award at the first speech meet, which makes one the team captain for the weekend. Also, I'm starting to plan the state Health Occupations Students of America conference, as I'm the state secretary this year. Most of my college applications are done, but I still have components to finish for Wheaton and Whitworth Colleges. Being a National Merit Semifinalist should help ease the stress over college costs, though. With all of these activities, my grades fluctuate, but I should be able to keep up my 4.0 if I am persistant. It was nice to hear from a former NYLFer after such a long hiatus in communication. I hope conditions are improving down in the LA/MS area and that the extra school doesn't add too much stress to everyone's life.

i haven't logged on in so long. anyway..

IT'S SUMMER!

Got the first year of college under my belt! , went to class of '06 graduations, weeklong leadership retreat, flew to LA for a cousins wedding, volunteered at a camp for kids with Muscular Dystrophy..it's been good so far. Time to chill until summer school starts. And I get to get my wisdom teeth out soon..loads of fun.
