All that I have ever really wanted to be was a surgeon. I have shadowed my dad in the operating room as he removes people's cataracts, and I feel as though I belong in the OR. The rush of adrenaline that I get standing in the operating room is thrilling, and to be the surgeon standing over a sick patient with a scalpel and possessing the knowledge and technique necessary to treat their pain and improve their quality of life must be about a million times more thrilling. I have only ever envisioned myself becoming a surgeon, and I really think that surgery was what I was placed upon this earth to do!
Is there anybody else out there who is considering becoming a surgeon? If so, what specialty?
Thank you everyone for responding! I am interested in becoming a general surgeon. What really sparked my interest in the field of general surgery, was reading a book entitled "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science," by Atul Gawande who happens to be a general surgeon at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. It was a book that completely altered my view of the field of medicine, and helped to inform me about the uncertainty of medicine, and what it is truly like. I would advise anyone who wants to become a surgeon to read this book. I LOVED it, to say the very least!
I'm planning on becoming a plastic surgeon. Really good business where I live. I did an internship this past year with one and it was one of the best experiences of my life!
I wanted to be a surgeon, however my dreams were shot down during frog dissections when i passed out...

I didn't know about surgery at first because I ride horses A LOT!!! My parents kept telling me that you can't do anything to hurt your hands if you decide to becoe a surgeon. At my forum, I listened to a surgeon talk and totally changed my mind. Apparently you can have a life and be a surgeon! I would really like to become a pediatric cardio surgeon. It is really specialized, eight years of residency after med school, but is the definition of what I wanted in a career as a doctor. Good luck to everyone!
