OK, I'm completely making this game up, so let's see if it turns out allright.
Here are the rules: 1. Say a medical term. It can be anatomical, a type of condition, a type of medical equipment, etc., but you have to have the definition. Here are some good medical dictionaries: http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/omd/ http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mplusdictionary.html http://www.medterms.com/script/main/hp.asp 2. The next person to post says a new medical term that starts with the preceding term's last letter. For example, if I could say:
Then the next person to post could say:
The following poster would then choose a world that begins with "L." 3. There is a catch! In order to help everyone get to know each other, you must say an interesting fact about yourself each time you post a word. You must also post either something you would like to find out about the person who posted before you or something you already know about that person. This way, we can not only learn new medical terminology, but we can learn about each other as well. OK, I guess I'll start! My word is Peptide- Noun. A molecule consisting of 2 or more amino acids. My interesting fact is that I have a 100 pound Bernese Mountain Dog named Lilly, who is the sweetest creature on earth! ---------- XoX Boston MED Session 3, 2008 xOx my blog-> http://forums.studentdoctor.net/blog.php?u=188514 |

Walking Pneumonia- Noun. A usually mild pneumonia caused by a microorganism of the genus Mycoplasma (M. pneumoniae) and characterized by malaise, cough, and often fever.
Something I know about MattRollins is that he likes to golf (I'm just guessing because of his icon). An interesting fact about myself is that I love to ski. Has anyone ever been to Killington in Vermont? That's where I go most of the time. ---------- XoX Boston MED Session 3, 2008 xOx my blog-> http://forums.studentdoctor.net/blog.php?u=188514 |

Anaphylaxis:Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening type of allergic reaction
I know that Carissa likes to ski, from what she's said. I'm a sophomore at CMHS (WI), and I'm in the musical, Crazy for You. Hope to see you all next summer. ~Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain.~ |

Well, I can tell that Sam likes to sing and act, being in a musical and all(so do I, Sam. I just finished Anything Goes). I love to ride horses, and I compete all over the country, mostly in the midwest and West. My horses are named AJ and Luke! Washington, DC Session 2 2008 <3Liz |

Acute Leukemia- Cancer of the white blood cells (leukemia) that characteristically comes on abruptly and, if not treated, progresses rapidly. The two major types of acute leukemia are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelocytic leukemia (AML).
Hmmm. I know that Liz is going to be going to Washington DC this summer! Something about me is that I said that I love to ski (which I still do), but this year I'm actually snowboarding too. I'm still not very good, but it's soooo much fun! ---------- XoX Boston MED Session 3, 2008 xOx my blog-> http://forums.studentdoctor.net/blog.php?u=188514 |

Angiogenesis, vaguely said, is a physiological process involving the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels. This normal process in growth, development, and wound healing is unfortunately also a fundamental step in the transition of tumors from the dormant to malignant state.

Spherocytosis-Also know as Hereditary Spherocytic Hemolytic Anemia or more commonly Hereditary Spherocytosis. HS is a rare blood disorder characterized by sphere shaped red blood cells which leads to a premature breakdown of red blood cells by the spleen resulting in amemia for most cases. The disorder is caused by a defective gene located on the short arm of chromosome 8.

Phew. That makes me want to hug my blood cells and thank them for not being spherical.
Alrighty, how about.. Skin graft! A skin graft is used when damage (such as third degree burns) is so large that skin is unable to regenerate. The process known as skin grafting involves the removal of a thin, fine sheet of skin from elsewhere on the body, usually a nice fleshy area such as the thigh or buttock. Then, the skin is transplanted into the wound. After some time, the new skin cells proliferate, join together, and heal the damage. Today, new techniques are being developed and used such as culturing skin cells in labs! this is a nice technique because then skin can e grown specifically for transplantation Yay skin grafts! That word ends with a "t." I tried to avoid the whole "-s" issue, or else we'd go through the entire "s" section of the dictionary before we could get to anything else :P ~ANdy Nutting Atlanta Session II 2008 Trinity Prep 2008 Emory University 2012 *Obviously the pic is not of me. Oh goodness, I forgot the whole getting to know each other catch.
Darn catches! Alrighty so,.. Carissa is planning on going snowboarding. I've always wanted to go snowboarding! More tolerable than water skiing. I'm not necessarily afraid of the water,..it's just.. spooky down there :P Danielle loves Henry David Thoreau, which is very awesome! I, too, love Thoreau. Me? Well, hm.. I ..ok I'll admit it. I like hospital food! Sometimes my friend and I will stop by Winnie Palmer (new hospital here in Orlando) and get something to eat. But their food is just exquisite! So you can't boo me completely. Sorry, I broke the chain too
Well, I have Hereditary Spherocytosis but I had my spleen removed, so I now have a fairly normal life (I just have to be careful about getting sick). Andy likes hospital food, and I admit Tampa General Hospital has some pretty good food too! I noticed you are planning to go to Emory, I am interested in going there as well. What do you like about it? Carissa- That's awesome you know how to ski. I just went for the first time last monday at my dads house in Utah and I was horrible. I was okay until I had to stop, I usually just fell over...oh well! I know I'm not a 2008 med attendee, but it's fun getting to know others interested in the medical field. Von Willebrand disease: An inherited bleeding disorder in which a clotting protein called von Willebrand factor is deficient or defective. Meaning that someone with this diesease will have more frequent nose bleeds and cuts will not clot as quickly as someone with out this diesease.
My name is Cassandra, but everyone calls me Cassie. I will admit that the food in the hospitals that they give patients isn't all that great...I know from personal experiance. I love to ride horses. I also play soccer. This year I will be in my school's musical (Fiddler on the Roof) with my two best friends. Being in the medical field has been my life long dream, and now I am relizing how close I am getting to living that dream. I don't think that I could ever learn how to ski! First of all I am not graceful!! And second I dont like cold! As of right now I am not liking the weather, yesterdays high was in the 20's or 30's. |

Erythropoiesis is the process by which red blood cells are created! In adults, this process takes place in the bone marrow. By the third or fourth month of a fetus, erythropoisis moves from the mesodermal cells in the yolk sac to the spleen and liver. And then sometimes it just stays at the spleen and liver which is called extramedullary erythropoiesis.
Cassandra likes to ride horses! I used to do some riding a loong time ago. I was in Peru and the horse I was on didn't feel like walking through this mud puddle so the stubborn thing walked backwards a bit and then jumped over it. I was a little child. I was scared. I felt like a cowboy. Also with all the theatrical stuff, I've acted on stage once (Midsummer) and stage managed over 10 shows. My acting primarily stays in the world of 4n6 (forensics, aka speech and debate). My favourite musical is Sweeney Todd. I haven't seen the movie yet, and I heard it wasn't too grand. Not surprised. I am friends with George Hearn who replaced Len Cariou for the role of Sweeney on Broadway. Blastocyst: A thin-walled hollow structure in early embryonic development that contains a cluster of cells called the inner cell mass from which the embryo arises.
You sound very well rounded Andy! I deffinetly prefer to act rather then manage. Sounds like that one ride was...fun, for lack of better words. Peru? That sounds exotic! I would love to travel the world one day...but not for too long, I would end up getting homesick. I've been around to most of the 50 states and parts of Europe. That is it really. I really want to go to Australia and South America. It sounds like you travel a lot, any paticular reason or just for the fun of it? And where all of you been? |

Tachypnea: (Pronounced tack-ip-nea.) Abnormally fast breathing. A respiratory rate that is too rapid. The normal rate of respirations (breaths per minute) depends on a number of factors, including the age of the individual and the degree of exertion.
I am from central North Carolina and I am a sophmore. I am not really into singing or playing an instrument, but I do have a nack for photography. I like to travel as well. I've been around the U.S. and to parts of the caribbean. Matt Rollins NYLF-MED 2008 D.C. Session One |

So Matt enjoys photography. Thats really cool. My grandfather is a profesional photographer. Or was. I enjoy taking pics but I'm deffinetly no pro at it. If you live in central NC then you live about 2 or 3 hours away from me, depending were exactly. I live in an unmarked city. Carthage, its about 30 min. away from Southern Pines. Why do you travel Matt? For the fun of it? Or another reason? |

Perilingual: Development of speech and language.
I do love to travel!! Haha, what gave you that idea? And soccer...I play some, but not for school. I am already dedicated to other things. I mostly play during the summer. From your pic. LizandCo. I'm guessing that you like to ride horses. I love to ride horses. I wish I had some of my very own, but sadly I don't. What else do you like to do LizandCo.? |

Lennox syndrome: A severe form of epilepsy that is characterized by the onset in early childhood of frequent seizures of multiple types, developmental delay, a particular brain wave pattern (a slow spike-and-wave pattern), and behavioral disturbances with poor social skills and attention-seeking behavior.
To Cassie: My family and I travel for the sheer fun of it. We just enjoy vacationing in different places each year. My dad and I are big history buffs, so we enjoy historical places like Charleston, SC, Williamsburg, VA, and also D.C. Matt Rollins NYLF-MED 2008 D.C. Session One |

Hematoma: An abnormal localized collection of blood in which the blood is usually clotted or partially clotted and is usually situated within an organ or a soft tissue space, such as within a muscle.
To Matt: That is awsome. My dad and my brother are also history buffs. I'm more interested in the history of every day people. My family travels a lot for 2 reasons. 1: My dad's job (well, what used to be) He was in the military, he retired this summer. 2: We love it. I think that DC is my favorite place to visit. But any where with a good museum is also good to go to. |
