Question:
I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to feel oddly "out of place" at this event. I've never been involved in any program of the sort before, I'm basically just a pathetic C-average student with an unusual mind and an odd person having the idea to nominate me, living in a strange, unfamilar southern state, working odd jobs for spending money. I'm not poor in the least, but at the same time, I'm middle class at best.

Basically, what I'm asking is - am I alone in an overall feeling of "I don't belong here"?

Choices:
Nah, this is strange to me, too.
I'm pretty active in programs, methods, etc - still going to be interesting, of course.
I spit on you, prole.

Pretty much everyone's going to feel out-of-place, nobody knowing anybody else. So if everyone is out of place, then we'll all fit in just perfectly.

I was waiting for someone to post something like this.
Although I have felt out of place many times, I'm not too worried about the week in DC. Or maybe I'm just trying to tell myself that, my mind won't deicide.
I'm just going to act as I normally do, and I hope nobody is going to be offended if I just stand in a corner and people watch for an hour or so.
anywho...

I never of myself as "unaware", but when my mom handed me a stack of papers of what I need to know & where I should stand on certain topics, I felt like I had been living in an underground bombshelter for the past 20 years..I am going to be so lost at this thing lol

Haha, I felt the same way. When I read the thing about the Gulf of Guienia my train of thought was something along the lines of "Oh man I have to sttudy for this? I thought it was going to be just a fun trip...Oh no!!! This is a smart people convention!!!" Don't worry about it.

That worried me until I read "theoretical exercise". Don't plan to study up for something too much if they're just going to start throwing out random situations.

"A shipment of Brie cheeses has been derailed, with terrorists holding the precious cargo until their demands have been met - the demands are unknown, however, seeing as the terrorists have tended to shoot anyone on-sight. Your goal is to come up with a strategic plan of action to keep the peace, while simultaniously retrieving the supply. Your only tool will be a toothbrush and these gerbils. You have ten minutes."

I have a cynical, almost misanthropic sense of humor. I don't think the friend-to-restraining order ratio would be very good.

Yeah this is new to me too but im just going to participate, learn, and have a good time. I think that its really what this should be about, meeting people and having fun. I really hope that we don’t have a bunch of insane political zealots that will tear apart everyone who gets in their way just to look good.

I think I will be out of place. I mean I am a hardcore kid going to be put in a very strict setting. I mean sometimes I want to just Throwdown and mosh (if you want to have a hotel mosh or if you want to two-step or want to learn, I.M. me Vikingsteadyeyes) but like idk man. I have my political views and I can kinda back them up. Other than that, I don't know why I got chosen.

Aim = Vikingsteadyeyes

^^ You'd be suprised. I don't suppose you're going to the 11th-16th session, are you?

I doubt there will be 4 hours of homework a night, being as "room checks" are at 10:45 or so. Don't really freak out about these things, because it's not like you're gonna be a new kid at a school where everyone else knows each other. Everyone is just coming from their own school and so you'll be making friends quick. And don't freak about the "work load" because this is supposed to be a fun experience, not boot camp or anything. You're supposed to look forward to missing a week of school!

In my group there was only about 30-45 minutes of "homework" the first couple of nights. One or both of my roommates had an addition assignment, but that was it.

It isn't really a "nerd convention". There are people from athletics, rotc, etc. All walks of life in other words, and you do make friends quickly. I'm a pretty shy person, but I still made friends quick.

And about studying, I did a minimal amount(read, almost none) and I was fine. They give you a booklet detailing the situation, the book is fairly thick but it has a lot of different things in it, and your "homework" will be from that. So you can learn most of the stuff when you get there.

Don't worry about feeling out of place. I worried, but was absolutely fine. Just go and have fun.

i agree... i think that the main thing to keep in mind is just to have a good time... if we all do it, we'll all be on the same level Razz... and if nothing else, it practically guarantees youll have a good time
