How much money does everyone plan on takeing for, the shuttle, lunches, and other misc. things that might come up? I really have no clue on how much to bring.
Well, me neither, I don't really have a clue, I accounted for a lot extra, just in case. It'd be interesting to hear from some alumni. I'm taking about 100 USD for lunches/meals. I think it should costt 70 dollars total. I got thirty extra for misc food items, souveneirs, and misc. I'm probably taking 150-200 just to be safe. But I don't have a clue. I do know that souveneirs at places like the museums are not cheap. If you want to buy stuff from those chinese ladies who stell stuff on the mall then it'll be like 10 dollars a jacket/shirt, maybe less. It all depends. I'd bring more just in case. But lunch will be 70 dollars, because the book says to count 8-10 dollars per day. That's six days, that's 60, add 10 for safeness, 70. The shuttle is 40 bucks. But I'm not taking the shuttle since I'm getting a friend to drive me from Capitol HIll to the place. Yeah, anyway, if anyone else has any clues on how much (alumni?) that would be great.

I am taking about 200. I have a friend who went to the medical one in the spring and she brought 200 and that it was enough, unless you are a bigh eater.
Agrees with FPOTUS. I'm going to take the minimum. . .so I'm really also wondering what the minimum is. Chad34 makes it sound like 200 is the minimum? How many souveneiers did your friend purchase? Or was that all food?

I think a minimum safe amount is $20 a day. Add in touristy purchases... FBI shirt, political buttons, camera film, etc. If you think you will buy lots of souviniers, then bring... however much you are willing to spend.

No it was not all food. She bought a few souvenirs, girl things. She did bring money home from the 200 but I don't know how much. I know she did take a lot of pictures. I guess it depends on how much you like souvenirs.
My group (DID, Oct. 2004) got to go to Union Station which has a lot of stores, etc. There is food spending, emergency purchases (ie toothpaste, contact solution), and discretionary spending - do not waste too much of your cash on souviniers or you will not be able to eat!

Ah, I love Union Station. I hope our group gets to go. It does have alot of stores..and one really great bookstore. Good advice! Thanks so much for helping us out. And I'm not really going to need normal souveneirs, just souveneirs from places that I am not normally able to visit when I live in DC.

Actually I am really uncertain on how much to bring! My mom is scared I will wind up broke during the last couple of days and she wants me to be able to "enjoy this experience" so she packing me with cash and travelers check just to be safe for lunches, tour fees( if there are any) and souveneirs
That brings up a question. The tour fees are paid by the NYLF, is that not so?

You will not have to pay for any tours except for what you choose to do beyond the NYLF sanctioned activities. Um... this may include special tours on the Mall (you'll have free range for an afternoon!) but most things are free of charge anyway.

I think total spending money, I brought about $150 (at the very most...I don't rightly remember exactly). And I didn't spend all of it, maybe $50 at the very max. But then, I've been to DC a bajillion times and have all the memorabilia. But don't worry too much about it. Just spend it wisely. And remember, it's only a week.
